INTANGIBLE SENSITIVITY

‘Intangible Sensitivity’, is a conceptual exploration of an alternative method for experiencing architecture through the lens of the ‘intangible’. The project is a wearable apparatus which restricts sight, while amplifying the sense of smell and hearing, to challenge a perceivers visual bias of a building.

The project was exhibited at the MCA ARTBAR in 2016, as a performance installation, in which I (the artist) was able to interact with audience members while wearing the apparatus, with some members of the community trying it on themselves.
The appararatus was deliberately designed to have an exterior ridiculousness to attract attention and function as a form of social commentary; it draws upon the ideologies of Gaetano Pesce whose 'absurd devices' likewise intended to stimulate reactions and commentary from people who encountered his art.

Its form and appearance were influenced by the personal sound devices historically utilised by Germany in World War Two. It intended to be a personal apparatus that could be worn without being held, almost as an extension of one's own body.
